Home Furniture Construction: Signs of Furniture Craftsmanship

Home furniture construction is every bit as important as its looks – perhaps even more so. Most home furniture manufacturers offer much the same type of furniture, with not a great deal of intrinsic difference between their overall design and appearance. It is how furniture is made that matters, because you want it to be comfortable, hard wearing and last a long time.

The standard of furniture craftsmanship employed is very important, whether you are purchasing a table, cabinet or sofa. Here is what to look for in your own home furniture before you part with a single cent:

The Construction

You can always tell how well a furniture manufacturer builds it furniture by checking a drawer. Just one drawer is all it takes to make a fairly accurate judgment. Remove the drawer and check the joints. There should be dovetail joints all round, signifying strength and durability. The front joint should be hidden dovetails, so they don’t show on the outside face.

Inspect the outside and inside of each drawer to make sure everything has been properly smoothed down, and its contents are unlikely to be snagged. The sign of good furniture craftsmanship is that even the outside surfaces of the drawers, including the bottom, have been properly smoothed and finished. They should also open smoothly, preferably with a central drawer guide rail to prevent any lateral movement.

Rails and framework should be fitted using proper carpentry joints: cross rails using dovetails or pinned mortise and tenon joints. Mortise and tenons should be used on the main frame of chests, cabinets and armoires. The wood finish should be added in steps. This should begin with a preservation coat and then the staining and finishing coats added.

Back panels should not be stapled – these frequently loosen, and the furniture could be weakened. In fact, if the correct jointing techniques have been employed in home furniture construction, the back panels should not be needed for strength – the frame should be strong enough itself. Nevertheless, panels should be attached using screws and corner blocks. An important aspect of taller furniture is that it has been tested for stability. You don’t want a tall chest tipping over when you pull out a filled top drawer.

Furniture Craftsmanship in Upholstered Furniture

Here again the strength of the frame is all-important. You sometimes find upholstered home furniture construction given less attention than that of cabinetry because it is not so visible. However, the frame should at least be constructed from a properly jointed hardwood frame, and not just from plywood panels nailed together as you sometimes find. A well-built frame provides a solid base for the springing and other upholstery, and your chairs and sofas will last a long longer because of it.

The base of the seat should first be correctly webbed and then sprung using steel springs of the right size for the depth of the seat. The springs should be properly secured to a solid wood frame and tied together so that the seat is comfortable to sit on. They should then be covered with canvas or synthetic burlap, and then stuffed using a suitable natural or synthetic stuffing material before adding a final cotton batting that acts as a base for the cover.

The External Covering Fabric

The cover fabric should be hardwearing, meeting industry standards for upholstery fabrics and also meet any fire-resistance regulations applicable. The cover should be properly tacked to the frame, although it is common these days simply to use a staple gun. The cushions should be filled comfortably, some preferring a coil sprung filling wrapped in a layer of foam or batting. Whichever type is used, the internal fiber should be effectively secured and distributed evenly.

Finally check the overall appearance of the furniture. If your upholstered furniture has been manufactured using proper standards of home furniture construction, it should look good, feel completely stable and also be comfortable to sit on. The covers and cushions should fit correctly, and be neatly sewn, and the seat should offer support at the front edge and not sag.

Home furniture construction is very important, and without being sure that proper standards of good furniture workmanship have been employed in its manufacture, you should not expect it to last. While furniture hand-crafted from solid wood and the best materials can be expensive, you should assess that against the cost of replacing poorly made furniture that fails to last.

House Moving, the Environmentally Friendly Way

House moving may not always be the most eco-friendly affair. Moving out of a home requires a significant amount of resources, supplies and not to mention, time. If we are not careful, the entire process can leave a huge mess of non-recyclable material (particularly if you have a habit of storing non-essentials in the house) and generate harmful emissions, all of which is not environmentally friendly. Fortunately with a little effort and planning, even when moving, we can still do our part to save the earth. If you’re planning to relocate soon, here are some tips to help minimize the eco-damage associated with moving.

Plan For a Single Trip

Automobiles release a large amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and a moving truck contributes to these emissions. It gets worse if you have to make multiple trips when relocating. You can minimize these emissions by planning for a single trip and one of the ways to do this is to rent a large-enough vehicle. A smaller vehicle may have to do several trips and that would contribute a large amount of emissions. Look for a vehicle that will fit everything you need to move so that you only make one trip.

Donate or Sell What You Don’t Need

Bulky items such as furniture and old electronics you don’t want anymore only add weight and take up space in the moving truck. The heavier the truck is the more emissions it releases and the more fuel it uses. Hence, you may instead wish to donate some of these items or get rid of them in a garage sale. Alternatively, you can also sell them online. Sites like eBay are great for this purpose.

By selling or donating your unwanted items, you will free up more space in the truck and also minimize fuel consumption. The unwanted items will also be put into good use in another home rather than wastefully dumped.

Use Green, Biodegradable and Recycled Packing Supplies

Not all packing supplies are recyclable. Hence to move the eco-friendly way, make an effort to use green moving supplies where possible.

Rather than using new cardboard boxes, use recycled ones. Instead of Styrofoam peanuts, lay your hands on green packing peanuts and don’t forget to choose biodegradable packing tape. But don’t stop here. You may also consider using old newspapers or linen to wrap up delicate items or use packaging from old purchases. Doing so will have an added benefit of helping you minimize moving costs. In addition, non-disposable containers are terrific when used for a green move; instead of using just traditional cardboard moving boxes, try using plastic containers, clean trash cans and plastic bins.

Packing Breakables For a Move

Instead of bubble wrap, shredded newspaper and linen can be used as an alternative to wrap breakables and paintings. Just wrap your fragile items with linen or newspaper, tape it down with green packing tape and you’ll save a ton on bubble wrap. More importantly, you won’t have to throw anything away when you get to your new home. It’s a simple solution that works for your benefit and for the environment.

Hire a green moving company

Lots of moving companies advertise green business practices and they make excellent contractors for an eco-friendly move. Some green movers use low-emission vehicles and recycled supplies which help cut down on toxic emissions while other movers power their offices using renewable energy. Green companies make it a point to reduce the effects of toxic waste and facilitate house moving the eco-friendly way.

Other Little Things to Consider

If you are cleaning up the old place after the move, use environmentally friendly cleaning products or insist that your hire cleaners use them.

In you new home, find all opportunities to install and use only energy saving gadgets. For example, use LED lighting instead of incandescent bulbs or dc motor energy saving ceiling fans instead of the traditional ac motor powered ones. Above all, get rid of the habit of buying things on impulse only to dump them a few years later.

12 Simple Tips for Moving House

1.) Write an inventory. Go room to room listing what you will be taking with you. This will help when contacting removals companies so they will be able to give you the best quote for the amount you need to move. If hiring your own van, it will help you decide what size van you require.

2.) It’s never too soon to start packing. Pack away everything that is not a necessity. If you don’t need to use it every day, it can get stored for moving.

3.) Use up the food in your freezer and remember to turn it off in advance of moving so it can defrost. If you need to buy food, buy only fresh or cupboard items.

4.) Label boxes. This sounds like such an obvious thing to do but it can really help with the process. Write which room each box is going in for easy unpacking and also write roughly what the contents are. Another idea, one which can keep children occupied, is to get them to doodle on the boxes. Tell them to draw what is going inside it and then they’ll know exactly where all their things are.

5.) As soon as you know you are moving to a new place, talk to the children about it. Make sure that they know all their belongings will be moving too and reassure them that nothing will be forgotten. Tell them all of the good points about the new house (perhaps it’s closer to family/ friends or to the school/ nursery they go to, maybe a bigger house and garden for them to play in). If you can, try to take them to see the house before the move. Help them to visualise where all their toys will go and talk about all the exciting things you’ll be able to do together once the move is complete.

6.) Arrange for your utilities (Gas, Electricity, Satellite/Cable, Phone, Broadband) to be moved to your new house, or request final bills. The usual amount of notice you need to give to providers is 31 days, however most companies will let you cancel earlier for a fee. If you are under contract it may not be possible to cancel, or it may cost you the remainder of your contract.

7.) Make an extensive list of all the things you will need to change address for. A helpful tip is to go through your email folders and make a list of all the sites you have bought from/signed up to. Here are some others that you will need to inform of your address change:

– Bank
– Doctor’s Surgery
– Dental Surgery
– Optometrist
– Local authority for Council Tax
– TV Licencing
– Vehicle Licensing and your Insurance Provider (there may be a fee for making a change of address on your policy)
– Home Insurance Provider
– Electoral Roll
– Window Cleaner (if you have one)

It can also be a very good idea to set up mail redirection. It can seem an expensive additional outlay but when you consider that the alternative might be someone stealing your identity, it really is worth doing.

8.) Send out change of address cards to family and friends. It can easily be done very quickly on a PC/laptop and printed out. It can also be helpful to provide your new landline number if that is applicable.

9.) Arrange special bags/ boxes to keep the kids occupied. Pack books, colouring pencils and paper, special soft toys and anything else they love to play with to keep them occupied on the big day. Also, pack drinks and snacks. It can be difficult to know how long the move will take and to plan dinners. Snacks are always handy for keeping little tummies going until you can get the basics set up in the kitchen.

10.) Arrange a removals company/ van hire. A quote from a removals company can vary hugely. The quote will depend on: how far you are moving, how many trips the removals company will have to make to move all of your possessions, what type and size of property you are moving from (if moving from a flat with flights of stairs to go up and down removals companies charge more due to the time spent negotiating the stairs). Always check the reviews/ testimonials of a company before deciding to choose them, ask for proof of insurance and don’t decide on the first company you contact. Get a range of quotes and ask exactly what the quote covers. You can also use a comparison site such as anyvan.com.

If hiring your own van there are some things to consider. Do you have the correct license for the van you wish to hire? Based on the square footage of the van, how many trips will you need to make? Do you have anybody to help you? If not, a removals company with several men or even a man with a van can greatly speed up the process.

11.) Don’t stress about the mess!

Don’t worry about the house being a mess for several weeks, if not more like several months. Moving house is a major upheaval and it can take a long time to get everything straight again. Keep calm, relax and be assured that it will get sorted out eventually.

12.) Take some time for yourself. Don’t run yourself into the ground because it can end up making things harder. Make sure you devote some time to simply sitting down and relaxing. It can help to de-stress for a while, particularly before bedtime

3 Mistakes People Make Before They Move

Whether you are relocating, downsizing, need more space or are a first time home buyer, at one point in your life you will be moving. Though the idea of moving can be stressful, the actual process of moving requires a lot more effort. After organizing and planning many moves, I’ve come up with a few setbacks many people have made in their process of moving which will help prevent you from making them. If you incorporate them all, you will find yourself 1) Packed efficiently 2) Moved into your new place in less than 24 hours.

Having the right moving supplies will 100% make your moving process efficient. One to two days before your move, make sure all of the necessary moving supplies are in your home and in their desired locations. For example, the average one bedroom apartment will require 35 boxes to empty out the room. Along with those boxes you will need a permanent marker, which you will use to write what room the items in the box goes in, and moving tape. If you want to be extra detailed, you could color coordinate each room to assure that after the move, every box lands in their respective room without confusion. A great place to get free boxes is from large chain stores. Typically stores like Wal-Mart stock their shelves and when they’re done, they dispose the hundreds of boxes at night. If you’re not willing to wait around, businesses like Half Priced Boxes and U-Haul sell multiple sizes of boxes at great prices.

I understand that we live in an era where we want to do everything ourselves to save a few bucks. Sure saving money is great but what about saving time? Maybe it’s just me but saving time is way more precious. Hiring a moving company will do just that. They come in and do most of the packing and moving. Especially when it comes to moving those heavy items, movers specialize in properly packing and transporting your belongings for you to your desired location safely. Most importantly, if they damage anything, they will either replace or reimburse you for it. They also provide all of the packing supplies so there’s no need to purchase them. Moving companies usually allocate 2-3 movers for each move therefore the moving process will take less time for them to do it then for you and your buddies to do it. It’s a complete win-win.

First of all you may ask what in the world is a Professional Organizer? Well in short, Professional Organizers, Clutter Consultants or Clutter Professionals, are people who remove clutter and create functional systems in your home to prevent clutter from re-occurring. They also pack/unpack and place your belongings in a more organized way in your new home plus, they will teach you how to maintain it. Above all, organizers will make the process of moving into your new home seamless. Your new home will look like you’ve been living in it for years. Hiring an organizer will prevent your home from sheltering boxes for months.

What Is The Real Cost Of Moving?

Getting ready to move? This might seem like the most daunting thing in the world, especially when you open your first drawer and you start to realize that even if you have a relatively neat house it still all adds up to a lot of stuff! This is when a state of sheer panic may start to set in! Hiring a moving company is not as expensive as many people might think it is!

The first thing to remember is to stay calm! I know this is easier said than done, but I thought I would say it anyways! Do it yourself moving is an option that a lot of people choose instead of hiring movers. This is probably not from a true love of hauling items up and down steps but rather with more concern for your wallet. Although this can be cheaper in theory, one of the most common problems that truck rental companies have is people needing to take a lot more time than they originally anticipated or booked the truck for which results in unforeseen higher moving costs. It can take a lot of time to move all your items and to make sure you can logistically arrange them in the truck. Also having your items arrived damaged seems much more likely!

Hiring a moving company is not as expensive as many people think it is. If you are moving in your own city, many times you can get a moving company that charges by the hour and that can help keep your costs down. If you are moving farther away or even across the country the stress of driving all your items yourself and navigating roads that a larger vehicle can drive on can be daunting.

The number of items being moved also affects the cost. One of the easiest ways to estimate your moving cost is to use a moving calculator. The number of boxes, the size of your apartment or house and the distance of your move are all factors. It is possible to get a premium moving service with all the cleaning and unpacking additional services but that is not necessary if cost is still your main concern. Being someone who has moved many times over the last few years, I would recommend taking a look at a moving calculator to get a better idea of the costs for your particular move.

Types Of Moving Companies To Choose From

Many people find moving from one place to another as a very tedious process. There are many tasks which need to be carried out effectively with proper planning. This is the reason people consider it convenient to hire the services of a moving company. The movers can take care of all aspects related to the moving process to help you relax.

There are different types of moving companies that help in handling various packing, moving and relocating needs. Depending on your need and requirement, you may need the services of a specific type of moving company. The first step in planning a smooth move is to choose the right type of moving company. The type of move you are about to undertake will play an important role in selecting the right service. Moving abroad and moving to a building down the road are two different things and require different types of moving companies to handle the shifting.

Learning about different types of companies will help in choosing one that perfectly matches your requirement. Here are different types of movers you can choose from:

Local – Moving locally means moving from one place to another within the city without crossing state borders. Different types of companies have different types of permits, therefore if you are planning to move locally, it will be a good idea to look for a company that performs local moves as you can get good deals from them. Most movers consider a move as local if it is within the distance of 50 to 100 miles.

– Long Distance – It means moving within the same state, but the destination is more than 100 miles away from your current residence.

– Interstate – It involves relocating to a new state, irrespective of the distance. The cost will depend on the weight and quantity of your inventory and the type of service you choose.

– International – There are moving companies who specialize in relocation services from one country to another. The company you choose should have all the resources for coordinating and carrying out international moves. The cost will depend on the volume of shipment in cubic meters or cubic feet.

Movers can also be classified on the basis of service they offered:

– Full service – These companies handle all types of relocation needs. They not only offer transportation services, but also packing, loading, unpacking and unloading services.

– Self-service – Companies offering such service only handles the transportation part of packing and moving. Other parts are handled by the consumers.

How to Decorate a Kitchen

Looking for easy and inexpensive ways to update your kitchen?

Are you wanting to create a warm and inviting space for family meals or entertaining?

Here are a few simple ideas that will give your kitchen an updated look.

When I first moved into my house, my kitchen made me feel like I was stuck in a decade that I never even lived in! The cabinets and hardware were outdated, the ceramic tile was awful, and the wall color and coutertops were just not my taste. I knew I wanted to spruce up the space, but I also knew what my bank account looked like.

Start sprucing up your kitchen by choosing the right wall colors. This will all depend on your choice of theme, style, or color scheme. I prefer to coordinate my wall colors with my textiles and decor, and to contrast with my cabinets and furniture. Another idea that will ad to your wall color, is to add some kitchen tile backsplash. There are so many styles to choose from, and will make clean up a breeze since the backsplash is directly behind your workspace in the kitchen.

If you are not happy with the cabinets or countertops, there are ways you can save money updating them. Painting kitchen cabinets is a great way to brighten up your space. Although it can be time consuming, it is a lot cheaper than replacing them! You can also just change your cabinet hardware for an easy update. There are many styles of knobs, pulls, or, hinges to choose from that won’t cost a fortune. When it comes to countertops, getting them refinished or reglazed will save you more money than having them replaced. However, I happened to find some pre-cut countertops that I wanted, and had a contractor cut to size and install. And, the pre-cut countertops even had large matching formica sheets that I had glued (using recommended glue) and cut to size, to the large island countertop since there weren’t pre-cut sizes large enough to cover it.

Now you are ready to add your decor. Whatever your style or theme may be, I would recommend coordinating your textiles instead of having every last piece match. The reason for this is because you don’t want to look at the same pattern every time you turn your head in your kitchen, which could cause you to get tired of it easily. Also, by having different shades and patterns, I think it makes it easier to pick up coordinating colors from your textiles, right to your wall or countertop decor.

When choosing your wall decor, I would recommend cuisine art themed prints, plates hug with plate racks or hooks, or shelves with photos or candles. Some of the wall decor can also be functional. Photo frames with hooks to hang keys, or decorative calendars or memo boards can add decor and convenience.

Your countertop decor can include the basic kitchen items that you use often, such as a stand mixer, or pieces to store food, such as a bread box or decorative canisters. Add more color to your countertop using artificial fruit in a decorative bowl, or simply fill a vase with flowers!

All of these ideas will help you decorate your kitchen without having to spend a lot of money. They can create a warm and inviting space for good food, and good conversation with family and friends. Get your kitchen updated, and start enjoying it!

Bring the Tuscany Valley to Your Home Decorating

Home Decorating is a very personal decision, different with every individual. Your home decor reflects your personal style and individual quirks. If you’re having problems making a decision about your home decorating theme, consider a Tuscany theme for your home. Tuscany style combines subtle elegance and simplicity, using a palette of earthy warm tones. Tuscany decorating comes from the Tuscany Valley in Italy and is meant to bring the outdoors in. This great home decorating idea uses distinct materials to help accomplish this goal. Tuscany style is unique as well as beautiful with warm inviting colors and a cozy feel.

Textures are a big part of the Tuscany theme. It involves the use of stone and primitive tile for the flooring but wood or laminate floors can also be added to the mix. Textured plaster for the walls in a warm color is also another important ingredient in the big picture and here is where you can really be creative and add your personal stamp on a room. If you like beams, you can add them to a Tuscany styled room. They conjure up a warm, cozy and rustic feel. Mosaicing a floor is another way to add charm to a Tuscany theme. Consider tiling with slate or Mexican tile in your entryway. It will really set the tone for your entrance into Tuscany decorating. Also mosaicing a table top in rustic tile, such as again slate, terra cotta or travertine will add to the Tuscany decor. Partner it with a rod iron table bottom and you’ve got a real Tuscany home.

Any home decorating theme that focuses on nature uses wood and the Tuscany style makes great use of wood. One example is using large wooden beams. You can use the real thing or they now make “faux” wooden beams in different material including styrofoam. Do a Google search for faux wooden beams and you’ll be able to come up with some ideas. Tuscany home decor also utilizes wooden furniture. It needs to look aged and you can accomplish this with different colored stains. Although buying antique furniture would really do the trick. Tuscany decorating is based on a cultural heritage. Adding accessories can bring out the Tuscany Italian Heritage.

Accessories that are homemade are common for this home decorating idea. Ceramic vases are a big thing in Tuscany decorating, especially those made of terra cotta. Terra cotta items is a running theme in Tuscany home decorating. Silver frames, silver candlesticks and copper pots, or anything else copper are all common in the Tuscany design. When I think of Tuscany, I think of wine and grapes and cheese. Beautiful wine glasses, and, if you can find them, antique wine glasses would be a beautiful addition to your Tuscany decorating. Large glass jars filled with olives, vases filled with colorful flowers and, again, anything terra cotta add to the ambiance of Tuscany decorating.

Tuscany fabric is in a class all by itself. When using Tuscany fabric in this home decorating theme, look for fabrics made of fibers from the banana tree, Savannah and tobacco cloth, burlap and abaca fiber. These fabrics create a natural space and environment and are quite versatile for just about anything in your decorating project. Curtains, drapes, blinds, dividers, screens, placemats, floor-mats, these can all be created from the various tuscan fabrics because of their weight, density and flexibility.

Decorating your home in the Tuscany style makes good use of colors in the red and yellow family in bright or muted shades. See if you can find these colors in tassels and tie-backs to accent your drapes. You can also add ribbons in these colors and add them to candlesticks, jugs, baskets and anything else you can think of. Any item or accessory which resembles the sea, earth or forest make great additions to Tuscany style home decorating. Color, texture, fabric and accessories will create a warm and inviting feeling in any space in your home. Tuscany style is one of simplicity and nature and is a great home decorating idea
